American Lutheran Conference Publications 1936-1943.

This record series consists of bound and unbound periodicals published by the American Lutheran Conference (ALCONF). Also included are two issues of Studies in Lutheran Higher Education, which were published reports from the Commission on Higher Education. The first journal was the Journal of the American Lutheran Conference, published monthly from 1936-1940. It at first consisted of editorials, articles, and book reviews. Soon other sections appeared, such as "The Sermon" and "The Ecclesiastical World." In April 1940 the publication changed its name to the Journal of Theology of the American Lutheran Conference in an attempt to make theology the focus of the journal. New departments of the magazine included "Conference Activities," "The Preachers' Corner," "Open Forum," "Observation Post," and "Book Shelf." In May 1943 the name was changed to the Lutheran Outlook, and its function shifted to serve less as a theological journal than as a magazine to promote specific activities of the ALCONF. Some issues of the Lutheran Outlook have been cut apart, with sections missing. The 1945 issues are bound and separated from the rest of the issues. The March 1937 issue of the Journal of the American Lutheran Conference published the minutes of the ALCONF Conventions from 1930-1936. The minutes and later proceedings of the 1938, 1940, and 1942 biennial conventions were published in the Journal of the American Lutheran Conference and Journal of Theology of the American Lutheran Conference. By the 1944 convention, the proceedings were published separately in a Convention Report. The records of the Committee on the Lutheran Outlook can be found in ALCONF 1, Records, 1929-1954.
